E-3 (bottom) B/C Corner (top)

Jan. 28, 1997 - Night fishing @ E-3, incoming tide.  Warmer weather is bringing 'em back.  I kept 8 yellow mouth trout (13-16-in.) have no idea how many I lost or threw back.  Another fisherman scolded me for throwing so many back.  He'd filled two 5-gal. buckets and wanted to give fish to his in-laws and neighbors.  My fish would take longer to clean than to catch, so I left.  Most were caught 6 to 8-ft. below the surface, on a white and pink twisty tail jig (see below) tipped with a small piece of shrimp as a ‘sweetener.'

Feb. 1, 1997 - Caught 8 yellow mouth trout and a small flounder at the corner of Bravo and Charlie Piers, bumping a white jig along the bottom.  Kept the 6 biggest trout, released everything else.

Feb. 2, 1997 - Caught a yellow mouth trout and an 18-in. flounder at the junction of Bravo and Charlie Piers.  High tide, jigging on the bottom.

Alec Newell's Fishing Log

Fish caught while salt-boxing @ E-1
Jan. 11, 1997 - Night fishing @ E-3 Released 2 yellow mouth trout, appx. 12-14-in. and kept 4 for Mac (my father), two of them were big enough to touch both sides of the cooler.  They're getting bigger.

Jan. 12, 1997 - Caught 4  nice YMT 15.5 to 17.75 inches each, while salt-boxing* all night at E-1.
*Salt-boxing is an outmoded, 10-12-hr. procedure for load testing ships' service generators.  (We were on the clock.)

Jan. 16, 1997 - Caught a 17.5-in. 2-lb. spotted sea trout (?) on the incoming tide @ E-1.  It was the first fish taken on the new (5' 6") $12.00 spinning rod I bought at Big Lots.  Gave the fish to Stoddard Andreu (a neighbor) who pronounced it a "good fish" but said that it was a yellow mouthed trout.  Stoddard is an old fisherman who knows more about them than I do.

Jan. 17, 1997 - High tide. Caught and released a small flounder at E-1 using a chartreuse jig w/gold metal flake tail and a 1/4-oz. red jig head.  Freeze expected tonight.

Jan. 19, 1997 - No action all day.  Night fishing at E-1 while load testing another ship's service generator, water temp. 55 deg. F.  Caught and released a single 13-in. YMT at about 10:00-pm.  Action slow.  Switched from green to white grub tails, but nothing seemed interested in either color.

Jan. 22, 1997 - Fished the Trout Hole.  The moon, tide, bait, air temp. etc. all seemed to be perfect.  Caught just one stinking fish (YMT) @ E-3.  Cold water temps. may be the problem.

E-3 the Trout Hole
Jan. 2, 1997 - Caught and released one yellow mouth trout  @ E-3.  Was disappointed in the glow-in-the-dark plastic jig tails and dry scent baits I tried.

Jan. 3, 1997 - Caught 3 YMT @ E-3, kept 2, tossed 1.

Jan. 4, 1997 - SKUNKED - Low tide @ E-3, I could see them, but they wouldn't bite.

Jan. 5, 1997 - Rain & drizzle - Kept 2, tossed 1 YMT @ E-3.  Was sorry I'd released the 3rd (smaller) fish as the bite slowed.

YMT or yellow mouth trout
Jan. 6, 1997 - Caught 2 YMT @ E-3, before work.  Caught none during lunch or after work.  Served fish tonight to Brett and Joanne Hastings (in-laws).

Jan. 7, 1997 - Caught a 16-in. YMT @ E-3 on an incoming tide, lost another very nice one, same spot.  Air temp. dropping.
