Alec Newell's Fishing Log
Jan. 11, 1997 - Night fishing @ E-3 Released 2 yellow mouth trout, appx. 12-14-in. and kept 4 for Mac (my father), two of them were big enough to touch both sides of the cooler. They're getting bigger.
Jan. 12, 1997 - Caught 4 nice YMT 15.5 to 17.75 inches each, while salt-boxing* all night at E-1.
*Salt-boxing is an outmoded, 10-12-hr. procedure for load testing ships' service generators. (We were on the clock.)
Jan. 16, 1997 - Caught a 17.5-in. 2-lb. spotted sea trout (?) on the incoming tide @ E-1. It was the first fish taken on the new (5' 6") $12.00 spinning rod I bought at Big Lots. Gave the fish to Stoddard Andreu (a neighbor) who pronounced it a "good fish" but said that it was a yellow mouthed trout. Stoddard is an old fisherman who knows more about them than I do.
Jan. 17, 1997 - High tide. Caught and released a small flounder at E-1 using a chartreuse jig w/gold metal flake tail and a 1/4-oz. red jig head. Freeze expected tonight.
Jan. 19, 1997 - No action all day. Night fishing at E-1 while load testing another ship's service generator, water temp. 55 deg. F. Caught and released a single 13-in. YMT at about 10:00-pm. Action slow. Switched from green to white grub tails, but nothing seemed interested in either color.
Jan. 22, 1997 - Fished the Trout Hole. The moon, tide, bait, air temp. etc. all seemed to be perfect. Caught just one stinking fish (YMT) @ E-3. Cold water temps. may be the problem.
